Major milestone for east coast
A plaque to commemorate completion of the £10m Southern Felixstowe flood alleviation scheme was unveiled by the Environment Agency (EA) on 1 October.
The work was carried out by Team Van Oord - a partnership between Van Oord, May Gurney and Mackley Construction - which delivers projects for the EA.
The scheme provides protection for more than 1,600 homes and businesses, the Port of Felixstowe and several environmentally important sites. It involved construction of 21 new rock 'fish-tail' or T-shaped groynes stretching out into the sea, and placement of 225,000m3 of beach material.
Old timber groynes and rocks have been removed and the beaches re-charged. Collapsed parts of the promenade have also been repaired and two ramps for the disabled and pushchair access have been put in.
Dr Charles Beardall, EA area manager, said: "This scheme is one of many flood risk schemes we are implementing around the East Anglia coast line. Our programme this year will significantly improve protection from flooding for more than 4,000 properties."
Tony Coe, chairman of the Regional Flood Defence said: "By all of us working well together we have been able to achieve a result that could not have been produced by just one organisation alone.
Bert Groenewoud, from Team Van Oord, said: 'Team working is very important on projects such as this. Team Van Oord was conceived with this type of project in mind and I believe that our strong working relationship has been extremely beneficial in delivering this diverse project." |
